FEATURED BOOK

The Greatest Love Story Every Told

by Suzy K Quinn

This book was recommended to me by a newsletter reader and I’m so very glad she did. It is not a typical book I would search for myself nor one I would have been drawn to initially but a pleasant surprise.

Callum is a precocious nine-year-old who lives with his young mother and grandparents in their pub. The author is British so we get a lot of over-the-pond quips and humor.

It’s a touching story of a man who is doing a doctoral study on toxic masculinity when a child is not raised in a home with a father. He uses Callum as a case study and in the end, Callum changes the man’s life in the process.

The sweetest parts of the book are the relationship Callum has with Angel Rain, a girl he meets in the hospital who is a heart transplant recipient.

I had to remind myself often this was a nine-year-old speaking because much of what he says never came out of the mouth of my nine-year-old children or grandchildren (maybe when they were eleven or twelve), yet the story overall is a beautiful reminder of the innocence and strength of a child’s heart.

5 stars.

Stefan as a POW in Vietnam…

I awoke to the foul smell of urine and feces, magnified by the clammy, musty air. My shoulders and back bent in unnatural ways as I squatted into a tight ball with my knees pressed tightly against my chest. Every move I made brought forth more pain. Glancing around, darkness engulfed me. When I pushed one leg forward, a barrier met my bare foot. Where did my boot go?

I felt my way around the small space. A row of sturdy bamboo bars appeared on all four sides of me.

I am in a cage.

Thought of the Day

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.
