SEA TO SEA STORIES

Reichsburg Castle, Cochem, Germany | 1.2021

Berlin Butterfly Bulletin:

In Book 1, Ensnare, Ella finds herself in the art room and discovers a breathtaking painting created by Stefan, the Frankes’ eldest son. Cochem is a quaint little village off the Moselle River in West Germany. Winding through the narrow streets and past the village shops up a hill is a beautiful medieval castle with portions built as early as 1000 A.D. by the Franconian Palatine counts. In 1151, the castle was seized by the German Emperor and pawned to the archbishop of Trier. In 1689, the castle was completely destroyed by French soldiers and remained a ruin for 200 years until Mr. Louis Ravene from Berlin, restored the castle. However, in 1942, his descendants were forced to sell the castle to the Reich. Since 1978, Reichsburg Castle has belonged to the town of Cochem and offers daily tours.

*In book 3 “Release”, Cochem plays a more significant role in my character’s lives and I hope that those who have read the series will enjoy the following pictures.

The Courtyard

Part of the Dining Room

The Mermaid Lamp hanging from a wooden beam is intended to keep evil out of the castle. (To touch it brings you good luck)

One of the secret Passages found in the Romanesque Room. This one leads to the upper bedchambers.

The Hunters’ Room

The panes in the Hunters’ Room shows the Coat of Arms for the counts who lived in this castle.

Above is the staircase that leads to the Knight Room and the Balcony.

To the left is a view from the balcony overlooking the Moselle River. During the summer months, it is lush and green.

The balcony for those who have finished the series, it’s significance will be understood.

CHARLOCK’S CORNER:

I am happy to announce that the book following “Charlock’s Secret”, “Return to Charlock” is in full creation mode. I am excited about the comedy and the crazy that will come as Margaret finds herself in the future and unwittingly at Kat’s mercy.

Thank you for your kind reviews and emails asking me to finish quickly, haha I quite enjoy hearing from you and will do my best.

Be sure to read February’s Newsletter for the cover reveal and release date.

SECOND SURVIVOR SECTION:

In “Second Survivor”, when Anita and Maria are talking about the high number of shipwrecks around Menorca, the truth is, it was much worse than even the residents on the island were aware of.

The Sanitja Port where underwater archaeology is researched and surveyed by The Sanisera Archaeology Institute, 18 Roman Ships with cargo have been discovered in that small bay alone.

Just east of the bay on the point, before the Cavalleria Lighthouse became operational in 1857, it was known to be one of the most dangerous and deadly routes for ships. Though only 420 shipwrecks have been officially recorded around Menorca, it is believed there were hundreds more not recorded.

Some of the more famous shipwrecks besides the General Chanzy were 2 Dutch Galleons and a warship called the Wassenaer (1681) All 3 ships sank overnight on their way to the Mahon Harbor without a trace on the surface. The cargo included 56 canons, 300,000 pieces of eight, silver bars, and an undisclosed amount of Gold. The same company that owned the General Chanzy lost a total of 4 passenger ships around Menorca. The last one to go down was the Lamoriciere in 1942 where a total of 277 passengers perished.

Not all shipwrecks happened a century or more ago, some of the more recent tragedies include the Francisquita (1952), Benil (1981), Ocean Diver (1991), the Georgia K (1992), the Santa Clara (1996),
