SEA TO SEA STORIES
Berlin Butterfly Bulletin:
The Fairytale fountain in Friedrichshain Volkspark, Berlin, Germany is a unique baroque style structure dotted with the statues of many beloved childhood characters. Completed in 1913, the fountain draws people from all over Berlin to enjoy the Grimm stone sculptures designed by Ignas Taschner, including Cinderella, Snow White, Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and my personal favorite, Rübezahl. Rübezahl, being the story that Ella’s mother reads to her and Josef at night. It’s the childhood story of the mountain man who kidnaps a princess who likes turnips. She gets very lonely in the mountains so he turns the turnips into her friends to keep her company.
Ella is first introduced to this fountain in 1962 by a friend. It quickly becomes a place of solace and comfort while living amongst the chaos in East Berlin. While visiting the fountain myself in 2018, I found it’s charm to be exactly how I pictured it for Ella.
Through the side arches and behind the main fountain there is a smaller fountain with more statues. To the right side and down a private path, we come to the butterfly garden. The private sanctuary where Ella is surrounded by hundreds of these beautiful insects.
This garden becomes a place of significance for Ella in all three books of the Berlin Butterfly Series.

BUCKET LIST ITEM OF THE MONTH-
#50 Make a difference in a child or teenager’s life.
As adults, the Covid pandemic has affected many of us in extreme ways, whether it’s the loss of a family member or friend, job, home, or any number of things. As a child or a teenager, that feeling is nearly tenfold. They may witness the trauma but have little ability to help or change the situation. As a former teacher and coach, I see the struggle in children who don’t have the resources to cope or make sense of what’s happening to their security or foundations. They are afraid to seek help or speak out worried that their fears may contribute to the adults’ stress. Depression, anxiety, and suicide are up 800% with children/teenagers since March 2020.
*Look for an opportunity to make a difference whether it be your own children, grandchildren, neighborhood or community kids, or even at your local schools. Write a note, send a small gift letting them know you are aware of them, give them a chance to open up and talk, smile, and wave.
